Kidnap for ransom increases in Karachi, Pakistan

In the Pakistan city of Karachi, kidnap for ransom cases increased over a hundred percent within the last several years.

There was 92 cases of kidnapping for ransom cases in 2008, 64 cases i 2007, and 28 in 2006.

More antiquities smuggling cases for US Customs

The number of cases dealt with by United States Customs increased from 63 in FY06 to 134 in FY07.

500 million pirated books are produced each year in China, with 40 percent of all books sold being pirated copies.

$500 Million Counterfeit Drugs Market in Indonesia

Indonesia’s International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group estimates that 25 percent of Indonesia’s $2 Billion pharmaceutical drugs market is counterfeit.

25 percent of $2 Billion = $500 Million.

More teens in US abusing ADHD medication

There was a 76 percent increase in the number of calls to poison control cents in the United States regarding teenagers abusing attention deficit disorder drugs.

Fewer Cuban reaching US shores

In Fiscal Year 2008, the US Coast Guard reported that roughly 1,000 Cubans were able to reach US soil.  That number was down from the average of 5,000 in previous years.

The AP also reported that people pay up to $10,000 to human smugglers to be transported to the United States.

Drug cartels growing Marijuana in Colorado’s National Forests

In the summer of 2009, authorities in the US State of Colorado seized nearly 20,000 marijuana plants in national forests.  Officials believe that Mexican drug cartels are growing marijuana in US national parks because the increase security on the border is making it difficult to smuggled drugs.

Toxic waste smuggling in Italy

7 Billion Euros ($9.9 Billion) worth of toxic waste is smuggled each year by members of Italian Mafia clans.

The 7 Billion Euros in trash value is higher than the 6 Billion Euro value in 2008.

30 percent of all products sold in China are fake

The Motor and Equipment Manufactures Association reports that 30 percent of all products sold in China are counterfeit goods.
