The world’s biggest ecstasy haul ever recorded took place in Australia last week.

Australian police arrested 16 people after seizing the world’s biggest ecstasy haul — 4.4 metric tons of the drug found hidden in tomato tins on a ship from Italy last year.

“This is classic organized crime,” Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty told reporters in Melbourne today. “This syndicate is alleged to be involved in the importation of 60 percent of drugs to southeastern Australia.”

The ecstasy tablets, with a street value of A$440 million ($396 million), were found in 3,000 tomato tins in a shipping container in Melbourne in June last year. The drugs were substituted with an “inert substance” which police then monitored.
