Prime Minister Ivo Sanader had earlier sacked the interior and justice ministers following a string of unsolved beatings and murders in Zagreb.

In the beginning of the war in Croatia, hardened criminals were engaged by certain army and police units to carry out the dirtiest jobs of ethnic cleansing, and in return were allowed to carry on their criminal enterprises undisturbed.

Mercep’s units, “Wolves” from Sisak, Tuta’s convicts’ battalion, military police in Gospic, Sibenik, and Split, were allegedly swarming with criminals, murderers and war criminals who charged for their crimes in plunder, the profits from arms, narcotics, stolen cars and anything else that brought quick profit.

Promoted into war heroes, many continue their criminal dealings to this day.

Recent arrests of arms, narcotics, and human traffickers in Croatia are mainly the result of investigations and arrests in Serbia, revealing powerful Croatian connections on several international smuggling routes. Mafia brotherhoods established during the war appear better organized and connected than those tasked with preventing and punishing their ever more arrogant crimes. there is an interesting video pertaining to this raid on youtube. i found it while researching israely special forces.

there is a survivor of this raid who is in prison and set to stand trial. he is responsible for a successful kidnapping, one failed attempt, and a number of attacks. they we’re tained in Iran and Afghanistan.
