Coins trading on the black market in Argentina
Regular coins are being traded on the black market in Argentina as citizens fight inflation at record levels.
A kiosk owner bribes a bank worker with cookies to break bills. Subway workers let commuters ride free because they can’t change their cash. Bus companies resell the coins they collect at a steep black market markup.
Argentines are increasingly scrambling to get their hands on pocket change for everyday transactions, as soaring inflation makes the copper and aluminum that coins are made of worth more than their face value. Many suspect profit-seeking hoarders are scooping them up to stow away.
Argentine annual inflation officially hit 8.7 percent in September, but independent economists say the government is lowballing that rate, which they claim is closer to 25 percent.

Argentina providing ephedrine for Mexican meth traffickers
Argentina is now supplying a large portion of ephedrine, the main ingredient in methamphetamine, to drug traffickers in Mexico.
Mexican traffickers have become the main suppliers of methamphetamine to the United States. But a crackdown in Mexico has squeezed supplies of ephedrine from Asia, leading the gangs to seek their raw material in Argentina, a nation with a robust pharmaceutical industry, relatively few controls and a reputation for corrupt cops and customs inspectors.
The Mexican-Argentine relationship has proved an expedient marriage: abundant product, a compliant host nation and an efficient trafficking network. But the brutal killings have exposed the perils of courting Mexican drug rings.
“When Mexican traffickers arrive they bring in organized crime and violence,” said Special Agent Michael Sanders, a spokesman in Washington for the Drug Enforcement Administration. “That has unfortunately proved to be the case in Argentina.”
