Largest coca producer in world is Peru

In 2009, 45.4 percent of coca was from Peru, 39.3 from Colombia and 15.3 percent from Bolivia.

119,000 metric tons of coca leaf was from Peru, with Colombia producing 103,000 metric tons.

For processed cocaine, Colombia still lead the world in terms of production in 2009 with 410 tons.

Coca production in Peru increased over 10 years

In the ten years between 1998 to 2008, the area devoted to coca cultivation in Peru increased by 45 percent. In 2008 alone, the area of coca cultivation increased by 4.5 percent in Peru from the previous year.

In contrast, in 2008 coca cultivation in Colombia decreased by 18 percent from the previous year.

Cocaine production in South America

According to the United Nations, in 2008 South America had 167,600 hectares devoted to cocaine production, a decrease of 8 percent of 2007.

The cultivation area of Colombia accounted for 430 tons of cocaine, or 48.3 percent of the total amount cultivated in South America. Peru accounted for 302 tons, or 33.5 percent of the total amount.

At the start of 2010, Colombia was the largest producer of Cocaine in the world, followed by Peru.

Most coca production leads to cocaine in Peru

Experts believe that up to 90 percent of all coca harvested in Peru ends up as cocaine, with the remaining coca used as tea or chewed as a mild stimulant.

Peru’s National Institute of Natural Resources (INRENA) estimated that Peru lost up to $44.5 Million in 2005 to illegal logging activities.

Peru seen as major manufacturer of fake US dollars

In FY09, authorities in the United States seized $7.8 Million in counterfeit dollars that was believed to have been manufactured in Peru.

In addition, more than $18.2 Million in fake dollars was also seized in raids conducted in Peru.
