Tiger population dropped 70 percent over 12 years in SE Asia

Between 1998 and 2010, the tiger population in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Burma/Myanmar dropped 70 percent, from 1,200 tigers in 1998 to 350 in 2010.

Illegal logging and wildlife trafficking seizures in Cambodia

Authorities seized 2,700 cubic meters of illegally logged wood in Cambodia in 2009, up 400 cubic meters from 2008.

From 2006 till 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture has seized more than 11,000 chainsaws from illegal loggers and destroyed over 3,000 of them.

In addition, about 2,000 kilograms of dead and alive animals were confiscated from wildlife traffickers in Cambodia in 2009.

Majority of Cambodians pay bribes to receive services

According to a study released by Transparency International, 72 percent of Cambodians reported paying a bribe to officials in order to receive basic services in 2006.

250,000 women and girls trafficked in Southeast Asia each year

Up to 250,000 women and girls are forced to work in the sex industry after being trafficked, according to s study by the UN and Harvard University.

Several key findings of the report “Sex trafficking and STI/HIV in Southeast Asia: Connections between sexual exploitation, violence and sexual risk”:

  • Girls in Indonesia and Cambodia were given drugs and alcohol to keep them dependant to their traffickers.
  • 73 percent of victims rescued in Cambodia tested positive for sexually transmitted infections.
  • Nearly 20 percent of women who were trafficking victims for longer than a year had contacted HIV.
  • Many of the girls who are trafficked are between 12 to 16 years old.
