Illegal logging and wildlife trafficking seizures in Cambodia

Authorities seized 2,700 cubic meters of illegally logged wood in Cambodia in 2009, up 400 cubic meters from 2008.

From 2006 till 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture has seized more than 11,000 chainsaws from illegal loggers and destroyed over 3,000 of them.

In addition, about 2,000 kilograms of dead and alive animals were confiscated from wildlife traffickers in Cambodia in 2009.

214 elephants poached in Kenya in 2009

214 elephants were killed by poachers in Kenya in 2009, up from 47 elephants killed in 2007.

95 percent of all rhino poaching in Africa between 2006 and 2009 occurred in Zimbabwe (235 Rhinos Killed) and South Africa (210 Rhinos Killed).

Dogs illegally smuggled across South-East Asia

Up to 30,000 dogs are illegally smuggled across borders from Thailand and into Vietnam and Laos to be sold for its meat. The dogs are sold by traffickers for an average of $10 a dog, thus creating an estimated $3.6 Million market.

Number of wild birds trafficked globally

According to the US State Department, between 2 to 5 million wild birds are illegally trafficked each year.  The birds include hummingbirds, eagles and parrots.

According to the WWF, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Thailand are the three top countries in 2009 that were involved in the selling of elephant ivory.

Malaysian Tiger population under 500

Due to illegal poaching activities, the population of wild Malaysian Tigers are estimated to be under 500. In the 1950s, there were an estimated 3,000 tigers in the wild.

100,000 pangolins killed each year

100,000 pangolins are killed each year in order to meet the demand for the animals in China.

Pangolins are believed to help blood circulation problems and skin conditions.
