Child Prostitution in the Maldives

in Transnational Crime

A psychologist working with sexually abused children stated that child prostitution has become widespread in the Maldives.

According to the doctor, people from the Maldives pay up to $45.60 (700 Maldivian Rufiyaa) for sex with children, while laborers from Bangladesh pay $9.77 (150 Rufiyaas). Often, the paying customers are young men between the ages of 21 to 25.

Reports indicate that often times family members arrange for the child to provide the service.
