According to Jakarta Community Care Foundation, up to 5 million people in Indonesia consumed illegal drugs in 2012.
The number of estimated drug users is higher than the 3.3 million users in 2010.
In addition to the increase in drug users, the number of drug trafficking cases in the country has also increased. In 2011, security officials at the country’s airports broke up about 50 cases of drug smugglers attempting to bring in illicit drugs in to Indonesia. In 2010, there were 38 cases that were handled by officials.
Law enforcement state that up to 85 percent of drug smuggling attempts originate from Malaysia.
