Prescription Drug Abuse in West Virginia

The State of West Virginia in the United States has the highest number of drug overdose deaths in the country. Between 2001 and 2008, 9 out of every 10 drug overdose deaths in the state was caused to prescription drug abuse.  During that time period, the death rate from prescription drugs increased to 21.5 per 100,000 residents, a four-times jump from the 5.1 deaths in 2001.

In 2008, 390 West Virginians died from the overdosing of prescription drugs, compared to 91 in 2001.

In 2010, more West Virginians were dying from prescription drug in the state then car accidents.
